Near to the Brokenhearted

A gentle KJV devotional on Psalm 34:18 for grief, reflecting on the Lord's nearness without rushing sorrow or demanding quick answers.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18 KJV

Grief changes the shape of an ordinary day. A familiar place, an empty chair, or a remembered voice may bring sorrow without warning. This psalm does not tell the brokenhearted to become unbroken before approaching God. It speaks of His nearness in the place of pain.

The verse also speaks of a contrite spirit, a heart humbled before God. We do not need polished words to come before Him. Tears, silence, and a simple request for help can accompany honest prayer. His care is not measured by how quickly our emotions change.

There is no timetable in this passage requiring you to stop grieving. Allow room for remembrance, rest, and companionship. If you are walking beside someone in loss, listen before trying to explain. Today may call for a meal, a quiet visit, or a prayer offered together. Small acts of care can help a hurting person know they are not alone.
