What Does John 14:6 Mean?

Understand John 14:6 in its biblical context: Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life, with exact KJV text and a warm devotional explanation.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 14:6 KJV

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 14:27 KJV

John 14:6 is Jesus' answer to Thomas during His conversation with the disciples before His crucifixion. Thomas asks about the way to where Jesus is going. Jesus answers with Himself: the disciples are called to trust a Person, not simply learn directions.

As the way, Jesus brings us to the Father. As the truth, He makes the Father known and is worthy of our trust. As the life, He is the source of the life we need. The final clause teaches that coming to the Father is through Jesus. The verse is a definite claim about Him, not a statement that every path is interchangeable.

The surrounding chapter helps us hear the pastoral warmth of this teaching. Jesus is comforting troubled disciples; John 14:27 speaks of the peace He gives them. We can respond by bringing our questions to Christ, trusting Him, and speaking of Him to others with humility and love.
